Winter is when Manali looks like the postcards. It is also when the roads stop following
your plan.

If you are coming between December and February, here is what to expect on the ground,
and how to set up your taxi days so that snow is the fun part, not the stressful
part.

## What winter in Manali actually looks like

Snow usually arrives some time in December and comes and goes through January and
February. Some years it is early, some years late. You cannot book snow in advance.

What you can count on:

 * Cold mornings and evenings, often below freezing.
 * Short days. It gets dark early.
 * Ice on shaded stretches of road, especially after sunset.
 * Road rules that change day to day based on weather.

## Solang Valley in winter

Solang is about 14 km from Manali and is usually where the snow is when you want
it.

 * After fresh snowfall, the road to Solang can be slow or partly closed until it
   is cleared.
 * In peak holiday weeks, especially Christmas to New Year, traffic towards Solang
can back up for hours. Start early.
 * Ropeway, skiing and snow activities depend on weather and the operators running
   that day.

Our [Solang Valley day](https://manalitaxi.co.in/services/solang-valley-taxi/) is
planned around these realities.

## The Atal Tunnel in winter

The Atal Tunnel opened up the Lahaul side all year in theory. In practice, winter
still has the last word.

 * **After heavy snow** the road from Solang to the tunnel’s south portal, and beyond
to Sissu, is often closed to tourists. Sometimes for a day, sometimes for several.
 * **4×4 only.** On many days authorities allow only 4×4 vehicles, or vehicles with
snow chains, beyond Solang or Palchan.
 * **Time windows.** Police often ask tourists to come back before late afternoon,
when the road starts icing up.
 * **Rohtang is shut.** The Rohtang Pass road is closed in winter. If you see a
winter “Rohtang tour”, ask exactly where it goes.

When the road is open, a winter trip through the tunnel to Sissu is one of the best
days you can have in Himachal. Snow walls, frozen streams, very few people. Just
keep it flexible. See our [Atal Tunnel and Sissu trip](https://manalitaxi.co.in/services/atal-tunnel-sissu-taxi/).

## Which vehicle should you book?

This matters more in winter than any other season.

 * **For Manali town and Solang on clear days:** a sedan or SUV is usually fine.
 * **For Atal Tunnel or anywhere beyond Solang after snowfall:** ask for a 4×4 or
a vehicle that carries snow chains. Without it, you may simply be turned back
   at the barrier.
 * **For a group:** a tempo traveller is comfortable in town, but large vehicles
are often the first to be stopped on snowy roads. Sometimes two smaller 4x4s
   work better.

Tell your operator honestly what you want to do. That decides the vehicle.

## How to plan your winter days

A few simple habits make a big difference:

 1. **Leave early, come back early.** Aim to be heading back by mid-afternoon.
 2. **Keep one buffer day.** If the tunnel road is shut on your planned day, you can
    swap.
 3. **Do the town on fresh-snow days.** Hadimba temple, Old Manali, Vashisht and the
Mall are beautiful in snow, and easy to reach. See [local sightseeing](https://manalitaxi.co.in/services/manali-local-sightseeing/).
 4. **Check the morning update.** A local driver will know by breakfast what is open
    and what is not.
 5. **Dress properly.** Waterproof shoes or boots matter more than a heavy jacket.
    Our [packing list](https://manalitaxi.co.in/what-to-pack-himalayan-taxi/) has the
    rest.

## Getting to Manali in winter

The main highway from Chandigarh and Delhi stays open through winter. Delays are
more likely after snow higher up, and fog in the plains can slow the first part
of the drive early in the morning.

If you are flying, keep in mind that winter weather can affect flights into Bhuntar.
Our [airport guide](https://manalitaxi.co.in/bhuntar-airport-to-manali-arrival-guide/)
covers what to do if that happens.

## A word on safety

Snow roads are not the place for a driver who does not know them. Black ice does
not look like ice. A local driver who does this road every winter knows where it
forms and when to slow down.

If anyone pushes you to go further when police have closed a road, do not. Turning
back is not a wasted day. It is the right call.
