What the drive is like

From Jammu the highway goes south to Lakhanpur and crosses into Punjab at Pathankot. From there the road follows the Kangra valley route to Mandi, and then the Beas river to Kullu and Manali. The Jammu to Pathankot part is fast, but the hills after Nurpur take the most time.

A non-stop run is possible, but it is a full day of about 11 to 13 hours. If you are travelling with children or older passengers, we suggest a halt in Palampur or Dharamshala and an easy second day.
