What the drive is like
From Kaza the road goes west through Losar, climbs to Kunzum Pass and then descends along the Chandra river to Batal and Gramphu. After Gramphu you cross the Atal Tunnel to the Kullu valley and reach Manali. The road has rough, unpaved patches and water crossings, which are worse after midday when glacier melt swells the streams.
Leave Kaza by 6 am. The afternoon crossings between Batal and Chhatru are harder, and there are no easy places to fix a problem on the way.
