Landing at Bhuntar airport: getting to Manali without the stress

Bhuntar is not a big city airport. It is a short runway in a narrow valley, with a handful of flights a day.

That is part of its charm. It is also why landing there needs a bit more planning than landing in Delhi.

Where Bhuntar actually is

The Kullu–Manali airport is in Bhuntar, a small town south of Kullu. It is about 50 km from Manali.

The drive follows the Beas river north through Kullu town and up the valley. In normal traffic it takes 1.5 to 2 hours. In peak season, or if there is roadwork near Kullu, it can take longer.

So “flying to Manali” really means flying to Bhuntar and then a two-hour drive.

Flights are few, and weather matters

At the moment the airport is served by a small number of flights, mainly from Delhi, on small aircraft. A few things follow from that:

• Seats sell out. In peak months book early.
• Weather causes delays. Low cloud in the valley is enough to hold or divert a flight. Monsoon and winter see the most disruption.
• Baggage limits can be tight. Check your airline’s allowance before you pack for snow.

None of this is a reason not to fly. Just do not plan a tight connection or a big activity on the same day you land.

How to plan your pickup

This is where most stress comes from. A few simple things fix it.

• Share your flight number, not just the time. That way your driver can track delays instead of waiting blindly.
• Save the driver’s number before you fly. Mobile signal at the airport is fine, but you do not want to be searching messages with your bags in hand.
• Agree on a meeting point. Bhuntar is small, so this is easy. But agree on it anyway.

On the drive: worth a stop or two

You do not have to rush straight to Manali. A few easy stops on the way:

• Kullu town for a quick tea or shawl shopping.
• Viewpoints along the Beas where rafting points are. In season you will see rafts on the river.
• Naggar via the left bank road, if you have time and want a quieter route with old castle views. This adds time, so tell your driver in advance.

If you are staying in Old Manali, Vashisht or further up towards Solang, tell us. The last few kilometres matter, and some lanes are narrow.

If your flight is cancelled

It happens. Here is what usually makes sense:

• If it is rescheduled for the next day, simply move the pickup. Tell your operator as soon as you know.

Going back to the airport

For your return flight, leave Manali with plenty of margin. We suggest planning for at least 2.5 to 3 hours from Manali to the airport, more in peak season. Traffic around Kullu can be slow and you do not want to miss a once-a-day flight.
