Rohtang Pass permit 2026: how it works when you go by taxi

The Rohtang permit is the one thing that can quietly ruin your plan. Here is how the quota, fee and Tuesday closure work, and what to check with your taxi before you pay.

manalitaxi_admin 5 min read

Most people plan Rohtang the night before. That is usually where things go wrong.

The road to Rohtang Pass is not open to everyone who turns up. It runs on a daily permit with a fixed number of vehicles, and in peak season those slots go fast. So the real question is not “how far is Rohtang?” but “has my vehicle got a permit for that day?”

This note covers what you actually need to know as a taxi passenger. No fluff, just the parts that affect your day.

Why there is a permit at all

Rohtang sits at roughly 3,978 metres. Some years ago the traffic up there got so heavy that the snow turned black and the jams ran for hours. The National Green Tribunal stepped in and capped the number of vehicles allowed each day.

That cap is still in place. It is the reason you cannot just hire any car and go.

The basics, in plain numbers

These are the figures listed on the Himachal permit portal for the current season. Rules change, so treat them as a guide and check again close to your date.

  • Fee: ₹500 permit plus ₹50 congestion charge for a car, SUV or tempo-style vehicle. So ₹550 per vehicle, not per person.
  • Daily cap: about 1,200 tourism permits a day, split between petrol and diesel vehicles.
  • Release times: permits are released in batches, usually in the morning and the afternoon.
  • Tuesdays: no permits are issued for Tuesday. The road is kept for maintenance. Do not plan Rohtang on a Tuesday.
  • Vehicle age: vehicles older than ten years are not allowed.
  • Checkpost: your permit is checked at Gulaba. Carry a printed copy along with the digital one.

The official site is rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in. If anyone asks you to pay for a “permit” on another website, be careful.

What this means if you are in a taxi

Here is the part most blogs skip. The permit is issued for a vehicle, not for you. Your name does not go on it. The car number does.

So when you book a Rohtang day:

  1. Your taxi operator applies for the permit using that specific car’s number.
  2. If the permit comes through, that car (and only that car) can go up.
  3. If it does not, the car can still take you somewhere else, but not to Rohtang.

This is why you should never pay the full fare for a Rohtang trip before the permit is confirmed. A good operator will tell you the car number and permit status before you leave the hotel.

Questions to ask before you say yes

Keep this list on your phone. It saves arguments later.

  • Is the ₹550 permit fee included in the fare, or extra?
  • Has the permit been issued yet? Can I see it?
  • Which vehicle and number is it issued for?
  • If the permit does not come through, what is the plan B, and what will it cost?
  • What time are we leaving? (Early is better. The road gets slow by late morning.)
  • If the pass closes due to weather on the day, what happens to my money?

If the answers are vague, that is your answer.

Rohtang, Atal Tunnel or Solang: which one do you actually want?

A lot of travellers ask for Rohtang when what they really want is snow and big mountain views. Those are not the same thing.

  • Rohtang Pass is the old high pass. Open roughly mid-May to late October, weather permitting. Needs a permit. Expect a long day.
  • Atal Tunnel and Sissu take you through the mountain to the Lahaul side. No Rohtang permit needed. Usually an easier day and often just as scenic. See our Atal Tunnel and Sissu trip.
  • Solang Valley is closer to town and good for snow in winter, plus paragliding and ropeway rides when they are running. See our Solang Valley day.

If your Rohtang permit fails, Atal Tunnel and Sissu is normally the best swap. You lose very little.

A few honest tips

  • Go early. A 6 or 7 am start makes a real difference in season.
  • Eat before you go up. Food options near the top are basic.
  • Carry warm layers even in June. It is often 10 to 15 degrees colder up there than in Manali. Our packing checklist covers the rest.
  • Watch for altitude. Headache, nausea or breathlessness means it is time to come down. Do not push through it, especially with kids or elderly parents.
  • Do not plan Rohtang on your arrival day. Give yourself a night in Manali first.

Booking Rohtang with us

When you ask us for a Rohtang day, we check the permit position for your date first and tell you honestly if it looks tight. You will know the vehicle, the fare and what is included before you confirm. If the permit is not issued, we will suggest an alternative instead of leaving you stuck.

Send us your date and group size and we will come back with a clear answer. You can also read our fare guide to see how mountain fares are worked out.

[ADD BEFORE PUBLISHING: one short real story from your team, e.g. a day the permit failed and what you did instead. This is what makes the post believable to readers and to Google.]

Quick answers

Do I need to apply for the Rohtang permit myself?

Not if you travel by taxi. The operator applies for the vehicle. You just need to confirm it has been issued.

Is Rohtang open on Tuesday?

No. Permits are not issued for Tuesdays.

Is the permit fee per person?

No. It is per vehicle. One permit covers everyone in that car.

Do I need a Rohtang permit for the Atal Tunnel?

No. The Atal Tunnel route does not need a Rohtang permit. You may need a simple online registration to enter Lahaul, which your driver can help with.

When is Rohtang Pass open?

Usually from mid-May to late October. Snow can close it early or delay the opening, so check closer to your date.
