Delhi to Manali: taxi, Volvo bus or flight? An honest comparison
Bus, flight or private taxi? Each one works for a different kind of traveller. A plain comparison of time, comfort, cost and the catches nobody mentions.
There are three real ways to get from Delhi to Manali. Overnight Volvo bus, a flight to Bhuntar, or a private taxi.
We run taxis, so you might expect us to say “take a taxi”. We will not. For some people the bus is the smarter choice. Here is a fair look at all three.
The distance first
Delhi to Manali is roughly 530 to 570 km by road, depending on your route and where in Delhi you start. The newer four-lane stretches through Punjab and lower Himachal have cut some time. But the last part, along the Beas from Mandi towards Kullu and Manali, is still mountain road.
By road, plan for about 11 to 14 hours. Longer in peak season, in rain, or if you stop a lot.
Option 1: Overnight Volvo bus
The classic choice for students and couples on a budget.
Good for: solo travellers, couples, light luggage, tight budgets.
- Time: usually 12 to 14 hours, overnight.
- Cost: the cheapest of the three by a wide margin.
- Comfort: fine if you sleep easily on buses. The hill section has a lot of curves, which some people find hard at night.
- Catches: buses can reach late in the morning, so your first day goes in rest. Drop points are fixed, so you may still need a local taxi to your hotel, especially if you are staying in Old Manali, Vashisht or further up the valley.
If you are two people with backpacks and not prone to motion sickness, the bus makes a lot of sense.
Option 2: Fly to Bhuntar (Kullu–Manali airport)
The fastest on paper.
Good for: short trips, older travellers who cannot sit 12 hours, people coming from far away.
- Flight time: a little over an hour from Delhi.
- Then the drive: Bhuntar is about 50 km from Manali, usually 1.5 to 2 hours by road.
- Cost: the most expensive, especially when booked late.
- Catches: flights to Bhuntar are few, use small aircraft and are sensitive to weather in the valley. Delays and cancellations are not rare, particularly in monsoon and winter. Baggage limits on small aircraft can also be tighter than you expect.
Our Bhuntar airport arrival guide covers what to do if your flight is delayed and how to plan the pickup.
A common workaround: fly to Chandigarh instead (many more flights), then drive about 7 to 9 hours. See what the Chandigarh drive is really like.
Option 3: Private taxi from Delhi
Good for: families with kids, elderly parents, groups of 4 to 12, lots of luggage, people who want to stop on the way.
- Time: 11 to 14 hours, but on your schedule.
- Cost: more than the bus for two people. For a family of four to six, the gap narrows a lot once you count bus tickets plus local taxis at both ends.
- Comfort: you stop when you want. Food, toilet breaks, a view, a nap.
- Catches: it is a long day. A good driver will want proper breaks, and you should let him have them. Starting early (4 or 5 am) is the single biggest thing you can do to make the day easier.
You also get door-to-door. Your hotel pickup in Delhi, your hotel drop in Manali. No bus stand, no hunting for an auto with luggage.
Side by side
- Cheapest: Volvo bus.
- Fastest: flight, when it runs on time.
- Most flexible: taxi.
- Best for families and groups: taxi, usually an SUV or a tempo traveller. Compare options on our fleet page.
- Best for light, low-cost travel: bus.
- Most likely to be disrupted by weather: flight.
A few things people get wrong
- Planning sightseeing on arrival day. Whichever way you come, you will be tired. Keep day one easy.
- Booking a Delhi cab assuming it will do all the sightseeing. It often cannot. We explain why in this note on outside taxis.
- Ignoring the season. Monsoon (July to mid-September) brings landslides and long delays on the hill section. Check our best time to visit note.
- Leaving late from Delhi. A noon start means mountain driving in the dark. Avoid it.
